What Exactly is Rafting?
Rafting is a fantastic outdoor activity where a team of 6 to 8 people board a durable inflatable boat, and work together using paddles to navigate down a river. Led by an experienced guide, it's a safe and accessible way for everyone to experience the thrill of the water.
While some imagine rafting as only tackling intense rapids, our tours offer a wide range of experiences, from gentle cruises on calm waters to fun, splashy sections, making it perfect for beginners and families.
Rafting with Pioneers
Flying Dolphins has been a pioneer of rafting in Furano since the 1990s. For us, a tour is more than just descending a river; it's an immersive experience designed to connect you with the magnificent nature of Hokkaido.
Our mission is to create an unforgettable memory for every single guest. We're here to share our passion and ensure you leave with a huge smile.

Safety First: The Pre-Tour Briefing
Your safety is our absolute priority. Before every tour, your guide will lead a fun and thorough safety briefing. Here’s a summary of what you’ll learn:
Paddle Technique
Learn the correct way to hold your paddle and the basic strokes to move the raft forward, backward, and turn. Teamwork is key!
Seating Positions
Your guide will show you the most stable and effective way to sit on the edge of the raft to maximize your paddling power and stay secure.
"Get Down!" Safety Pose
This is a crucial command for approaching larger rapids. You'll learn how to quickly move to a safe position inside the boat to handle big waves.
If You Fall In
While unlikely, it's important to know what to do. We'll teach you the "swimmer's position" to safely float down the river and how to get back to the boat.
Rescue Ropes
Learn how to grab onto a rescue rope if one is thrown to you by a guide, ensuring a quick and safe return to the raft.

Your Rafting Gear Guide
To enjoy rafting safely, using professional, well-maintained gear is essential. We provide everything you need.
- Raft
- Our durable inflatable rafts are built with multiple air chambers, ensuring they remain safe and buoyant even if one part is damaged.
- Life Jacket (PFD)
- A Personal Flotation Device is a must. It provides significant buoyancy, ensuring your safety and confidence even if you can't swim.
- Wetsuit / Drysuit
- Made of neoprene, these suits keep you warm by trapping a thin layer of water that your body heats up. They also protect against scrapes.
- Paddle
- Your engine! A T-shaped grip on one end and a blade on the other, used to propel the raft and navigate the river.
- Helmet
- Essential for protecting your head. Our helmets are designed for water sports, minimizing resistance when in the water.
- Your Guide
- The most important piece of safety equipment! An experienced, professional guide who leads the way and ensures your fun and safety.
Our Unwavering Commitment to Safety
More Than a Rulebook, It's Our Promise
For us, safety isn't just a list of rules; it's the fundamental promise we make to every guest. Our top priority is to manage all tours based on the day's natural conditions, especially river levels. We will never run a tour if we judge the conditions to be unsafe.
This philosophy means we may change or cancel tours to ensure your well-being. We believe that making a safe decision is the most important part of providing a truly great outdoor experience. This commitment is the foundation of the trust we've built with our guests for over 30 years.
Your Rafting Questions, Answered
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
No. All participants wear a high-buoyancy life jacket, so you will float even if you can't swim. Our guides are also trained in water rescue.
What should I wear under the wetsuit?
Please wear a swimsuit or underwear that you don't mind getting wet. Avoid cotton, as it stays cold when wet.
What happens if it rains?
Rafting is a watersport, so we go ahead in the rain! You'll be getting wet anyway. Tours are only cancelled if river levels become dangerous due to extreme weather, in which case we will contact you.
Can I bring my camera or phone?
For safety and to prevent loss or damage, personal cameras and phones are not permitted on the boat. Our guides will be taking photos throughout the tour, which are available for purchase afterward.
